Abstract
Background and objective: The interdisciplinary field of Bio-Natural Products is currently shifting from a traditional, random screening approach toward a new paradigm emphasizing molecular mechanisms, sustainable production, and targeted drug development. Countries such as China and India, by combining their rich heritage of traditional medicine with modern biotechnological advances, have achieved remarkable success in the global natural products market. In contrast, despite Iran’s exceptional biodiversity and ancient history in traditional pharmaceutical knowledge, it has not yet gained an appropriate position in the value chain of this emerging industry. This article aims to design an integrated and strategic framework for research and development in the field of bio-natural products, linking discovery to commercialization and policy implementation, based on a comparative perspective of China and India.
Methods: This study is based on a descriptive–analytical approach using academic papers, policy documents, and e-books. It consists of two complementary parts. The first introduces a three-pillar research framework encompassing “source and identity,” “biosynthesis and production,” and “biological function and application,” while also formulating a national doctrine of development that addresses localization strategies, hybrid investment, intellectual property, and innovative financial models. The second applies Bereday’s (1964) comparative model to analyze scientific, policy, and economic structures in China and India, with the aim of adapting effective practices to the Iranian context
Findings: The combined analysis reveals that success in the bio-natural products sector depends on integrated policymaking, targeted financial support, human capital development, and the fusion of traditional knowledge with modern biotechnology. The integration of domestic research frameworks with international comparative models can pave the way for the establishment of a sustainable national bioeconomy in Iran. Key success indicators include the number of registered patents, market value creation, levels of R&D investment, and the growth of knowledge-based enterprises.
Conclusion: To achieve sustainable progress in the bio-natural products industry, Iran must adopt a unified national policy and strategic framework that bridges traditional knowledge and modern biosciences. Developing interdisciplinary research programs, supporting innovation ecosystems, and strengthening international collaborations will play a vital role in moving from discovery to commercialization.
