Abstract
Background and objective: Bacterial infections and antimicrobial resistance have increased the need for developing rapid methods for identifying infectious agents. In this study, the hydrodynamic behavior, bacterial transport, surface interaction, and electric field in a graphene–gold microfluidic sensor structure were investigated using Multiphysics modeling.
Methods: A two-dimensional model was developed in COMSOL software that included laminar flow, diluted species transport, reversible surface interaction, frequency-domain electric current, and qualitative particle tracing. The flow under steady-state conditions, the electric field at a frequency of 1 kHz, and species transport and particle tracing in a time-dependent study were investigated.
Findings: The simulation showed a local increase in flow velocity to approximately 1.8 × 10⁻² m/s and pressure in the range of 0.09 to 8.81 Pa. The highest potential gradient occurred in the 50-µm gap between the electrodes, and the electric field strength reached approximately 360 V/m. A decrease in bacterial concentration near the sensor surface was also observed. The surface interaction variable had a negative value, and the variable related to surface conductivity was not used in the electric current model.
Conclusion: The two-dimensional model described the basic patterns of flow, bacterial transport, surface interaction, and electric field in the graphene–gold microfluidic structure. However, the available results do not demonstrate bacterial detection or a change in the electrical signal resulting from bacterial binding.
