Abstract
Peptides are compounds with a length of 50 amino acids or less and a molecular weight of 5000 Daltons. They have complex or simple secondary structures. Peptides and proteins are used in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, health, food, textiles, and the biofuel industry. Peptides and therapeutic proteins have attracted significant attention from researchers and, in many aspects, outperform chemical drugs. Due to their selective performance, high efficiency, low side effects, and suitable safety, peptides have gained attention in the pharmaceutical industry, and the demand for these drugs is increasing. Approximately 80 therapeutic peptides have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and patients worldwide use them. The contribution of peptides to pharmaceutical research has significantly increased, with over 150 other therapeutic peptides in various stages of clinical trials. Peptides are primarily extracted from natural proteins (human, animal, or other microorganisms) or produced as new compounds through chemical synthesis. In this paper, we attempt to investigate the history, molecular properties, economic characteristics, and future perspectives of therapeutic peptides. This aims to provide researchers in pharmaceutical sciences and pharmaceutical industries with a better understanding and outlook on peptides. Research and development units in pharmaceutical industries can recognize their importance and take steps towards the production of these products. Pharmaceutical industries achieve their high goals for maintaining public health by producing peptide drugs. By preventing foreign currency outflow, they increase profitability and play a crucial role in treating patients with fewer side effects.
